BP Uncle Scrooge 45

BP Service Stations distributed a line of Walt Disney reprint comics in South Africa in the early 1960s. This was around the same time as Mimosa Comics and Atlas Publications were producing reprints.

It was printed by SA Litho Co (the same company printing Mimosa Comics) in Cape Town, in 1963. As with the early Mimosa Newsprint stock titles, these titles were printed in smaller size (166x241mm) compared with the original title.

32 Pages, full colour, glossy cover, excellent print quality.

Mimosa Batman 2

This is Batman 2, published by Mimosa (SA Magazine Co) +/- 1959.
It reprints the cover of DC Comics' Batman 120 (1958):
24 pages, full-colour, newsprint stock cover and interior pages.
These titles were printed in a smaller size (243x165mm) compared to the original DC Comics title.
The printing reproduction from the original was very good quality.

South African Comic Books is Five Years Old!

Blog Post 500 today ... thanks to everyone who has contributed in the last 12 months ... to have made this blog such a success!

Zebra Publications were the first to reprint DC Comics in 1954.
The English Titles were: Action Comics, Superman & World's Finest Comics
The Afrikaans translations were issued as " 'n Sebra Uitgawe ":  Mantelman (Batman) and Kongo Koot (Congo Bill).

This is Mantelman 3 from 1954. The cover image is taken from the splash page of the first story. The alter ego names are changed to Afrikaans names:
Batman (Joos Storm)
Robbie die Wonderkind (Jan Tyssen)
Green Arrow (Jan Olivier)
Speedy (Gys Roux)

It reprints and translates the following stories:
Mantelman: "Die Geskiedkundige van Misdaad!" = Batman: "The Historian of Crime" from World's Finest Comics 45 (1950)
Die Groen Pyl: "'Die Misdaad-Skakelman" = Green Arrow: "The Switchman of Crime"  from World's Finest Comics 45 (1950)

Mimosa All-Star Western Digest 12

This is All-Star Western 12, published by Mimosa (SA Magazine Co) in 1960.
It reprints the cover and all four stories from from DC Comics' All-Star Western 95 (1957):
The Trigger Twins: "The Riddle of the Reward Robber!"
Johnny Thunder: "Attack of the Gopher Gang"
Foley of the Fighting Fifth: "The Siege of Fort Desolation"
Strong Bow: "Secret of the Silent Indians"
Also reprinted is this story from DC Comics' All-Star Western 112 (1960):
Foley of the Fighting Fifth: "The Water Brigade of Fort Desolation"
32 pages, glossy cover and black-and-white newsprint interior pages.
These titles were printed in a smaller size (163x115mm) compared to the original DC Comics title.
This is one of the seven first titles that Mimosa started reprinting in 1959 (Western Comics, Tales of the Unexpected, Falling in Love, Mystery in Space, Romances, Batman and All-Star Western).

Zebra Publications World's Finest Comics 1

This is one of the earliest South African reprint comics. Zebra Publications were the first to reprint DC Comics in 1954.

This is Zebra Publications World's Finest Comics 1 - the cover is taken from DC Comics' World's Finest Comics 55 (1951).
It reprints these two stories from DC Comics' World's Finest Comics 37 (1948):
Superman: "The Superman Story"
Boy Commandos: "The Killer in the Iron Machine"
Colour cover, Black-and-White interior, 24 pages.
Smaller than the original comic size - dimensions 176mm x 244mm.
